Who Cares About Culture?: Some Executive Coaching Advice

A culture is a collection of historical beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, rituals or agreed upon social activities. In the workplace, we are the product of our historic culture.

As Business coaches, we want to give our clients executive coaching advice to be more influential and empowering than societal norms and outside influences.

Your workplace culture should be influenced by the business plan, mission statement, policies, procedures and leadership management styles of your business. In a healthy productive environment, the workplace culture should be designed to empower its employees.

America ages, and with age our culture becomes increasingly an ‘I’ based culture. People walk through life looking to grab whatever they can for themselves. It’s becoming more and more difficult to find people who care about the other person, especially in the workplace.

As business owners and leaders, we have the ability to affect our employees’ lives in very positive or negative ways. We can be giving and trusting. We can be ‘We’ oriented and team-leaders. From my own business coaching experience, I find that ‘We’ led businesses are the most successful. Within these companies, staff members make strong contributions and there are fewer turnovers.

Unfortunately, business owners and leaders can’t control what others do outside of their businesses. But, they can influence by practicing sincerely the ‘We’ attitude in their businesses. As leaders, they do this responsibly by holding others accountable as part of the team.

Is your business ‘We’ Led?

In time, unsuccessful businesses result from ‘I’ based leadership management. Usually, successful business leaders are not ‘I’ based. Sometimes managers think they are ‘We’ oriented, but in action their employees see and experience their ‘I’ driven workplace with a ceiling.

Interestingly, ‘We’ leadership applies to and works for the better of family, government and religious cultures too. There is power in ‘We’ led people who align their mission, goals, and plans with other team members, creating forceful support and goal accomplishment

Certainly, ‘We’ leadership is needed more in company cultures as well. With ‘We’ leadership, everyone is part of an action team. Employees using more of their wisdom and skills may make your company more successful and profitable than you could have dreamed.

As a business coaching company, our definition of success is indeed based on getting results! But it’s not just about profit and cash flow alone. It’s about caring, lid-lifting leadership. We believe in a win-win situation for everyone. This occurs when the owner, president, leaders, and employees all work as a team! Hopefully our executive coaching advice will be as helpful to you as it has been for us and our clients.
